Wireless Rocket Launch Control

My son and I started to build this today. My son wants to use his iPad and the Wemo App as a Rocket launch command.

The idea is to use a usb power brick, like the ones used to charge a phone, to power the Maker. Also a 12V battery to power the ignighter. This should allow for a wireless launch pad (except the leads to the ignighter of course). Using a second relay to separate the Maker's relay from the potential high voltage from the short, we would use the Maker's relay to close a second relay that shorts the ignighter and launches the rocket.

Supplies:

Wemo Maker

USB Power block

12V battery

relay

Estes Ignighters

rocket

wire and terminals

Thanks John S. for the schematic.

Re: Wireless Rocket Launch Control

We were just talking about this exact same idea in the office and how it would be such a cool use case for Maker. This sounds awesome. Please document wherever you can! You have a team of engineers and product managers at our HQ all really excited to see how this turns out!! Would love to see a video of the rocket launch in action whenever you're done.

Video of launch

So we were so very excited to get this to happen today that we rushed and shorted the relay in the Maker. We still wanted to launch today before the weather turns worse so we snagged one of our Wemo Switches and built the setup that way. Video is linked below. Images and schematic to follow.

Successful test.

Launchpad, would have been a much lighter setup with the Maker. lol

Not the most beautiful setup in the world, but got the job done.

Re: Wireless Rocket Launch Control

Here's the launch. We lost the Maker to a short, but created a similar setup with a Wemo Switch.
